The history of Loire wines goes back almost 2000 years, when the vine was introduced by the Romans. Another Roman who became a monk (then Bishop of Tours) also contributed to the development of Loire wines, a little later, from the 5th century: it is Saint-Martin. Viticulture then developed along the Loire from the 9th to the 12th century thanks to monasteries and abbeys such as Marmoutiers, Bourgueil or Fontevraud.
